Year-Round Programming and Skills Retention

Published On: August 28, 2025

The Harmony Program’s summer camp reflects the importance of year-round learning. Numerous studies show that students can lose up to 34% of their math skills and 28% of their literacy skills from the previous school year during the summer break. This regression does not stop at math and reading; it affects music skills, too.

Students who put down their instruments from spring until fall lose ground in their musical literacy, practice habits, technique, and performance skills. That is why the Harmony Program provides year-round opportunities for students to build on their music studies and expands access to students across the city to its free programming, including community-based instruction and ensemble performance.

Applications to join the Harmony Program’s weekly choirs and orchestras will be available next month, along with audition requirements. Stay tuned for more information in the weeks ahead!
