Student Stories:

Justin Laurenceau, Flatbush

Justin began trombone with the Harmony Program in 2nd grade. During his studies, he performed under Maestro Gustavo Dudamel as part of the Encounters Festival in Mexico City and the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA). He later earned an undergraduate degree in music education from New York University, where he received a full scholarship, and a second B.A. in music performance from the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music. Today he is a professional musician.

Megan Simon, Bedford-Stuyvesant

Megan began cello with the Harmony Program in 2nd grade. She had the opportunity to study and perform with musicians of the New York Philharmonic as part of our “All Stars” program before attending the LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts. Today she is a graduate of Syracuse University’s Music Industry program and training to be an artist manager at the United Talent Agency.

Tamika Merise, Flatbush

Tamika began cello with the Harmony Program in 2nd grade. As she progressed, she attended the Mark O’Connor Method String Camp, managed her high school’s pit orchestra, graduated from Baruch College, and received internship opportunities at Pandora, Sirius XM, and the Warner Music Group. Today she is a Publicity Coordinator at Def Jam Recordings.

Luigi Auquilla, Harlem

Luigi joined the Harmony Program as an 8th grade violin student. He has performed on the main stage of Carnegie Hall as part of the Bernstein Centennial Celebration as well as at Lincoln Center for the presentation of the Gish Award to Maestro Gustavo Dudamel. Today Luigi is a senior at New York University, attending on a full scholarship and majoring in politics on the pre-law track.

Thanddnes Palmer, Flatbush

Thanddnes joined the Harmony Program’s selective “All Stars” program as a 9th grade trumpet student. He was later accepted into the New York Youth Symphony’s Jazz Orchestra and Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program. Today, Thanddnes is a senior at the New School, pursuing a B.A. in music performance and performing regularly with his own band.

Romina & Renata Moreno, Washington Heights

Romina and Renata began cello with the Harmony Program in 4th grade. They were invited to appear on the television series “Mozart in the Jungle” as members of a youth orchestra and were featured performers at the annual Harmony Program gala. Romina was selected for the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA), and both Romina and Renata graduated from the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.

Ryan Hau, Brighton Beach

Ryan began the bass with the Harmony Program in 4th grade. As a middle school student, he qualified by audition for Carnegie Hall’s New York Pops Kids on Stage ensemble and El Sistema Europe’s summer festival, among other opportunities. He has participated twice in the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA) and attended Julliard’s Pre-College Division. He is currently a student at the Special Music School.

Izabella Pozo, Canarsie

Izabella began viola with the Harmony Program in 4th grade. She was accepted three times to the Interlochen Arts Camp, twice to the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA), and twice to the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra. Today she is a senior at LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts.
