Young Artist Program

Manhattan (Upper West Side)
3+ years of instrument experience preferred

This selective and comprehensive ensemble program provides New York City musicians in grades 6-12 with studio classes, ensemble rehearsals, and private lessons each week. Students also receive audition and tuition assistance to support their ongoing advancement.

Reading Level

All Stars Young Artist Program students should be working on NYSSMA level III–IV repertoire and must be able to play in 6/8, 4/4, 2/4, and 3/4 time and rhythmic patterns including 16th notes, rests, and dotted rhythms. Students should be familiar with mixed meter, compound time, and triplets, and be able to count using beat and sub-divisions.

Strings

Students must demonstrate basic bowing technique, including comfort with detache and slurs, consistent and appropriate bow distribution, and a basic understanding of vibrato.

  • Violin and Viola: Students should be able to play through third position with good shifting habits and accurate intonation.
  • Cello: Students should be able to play through fourth position with good shifting habits and accurate intonation.
  • Bass: Students should have the ability to cross strings in fourth position with good shifting habits and accurate intonation.
