The Harmony Program’s inaugural Midwinter Intensive is a week-long chamber music program open to advanced string players from New York City.

Join us for an immersive five-day musical experience during the NYC Department of Education’s Midwinter Break. From February 17 to 21, 2025, dedicated young musicians will have the opportunity to elevate their skills in a focused and inspiring environment.

The program features daily private lessons, chamber music coachings, orchestra rehearsals, and masterclasses. Students will receive personalized instruction from world-class artists to refine their technique and ensemble playing.

The intensive culminates with a series of masterclasses, led by world-renowned guest artists, and concludes with a final performance. This showcase will feature the chamber orchestra and both chamber ensembles, and it will be held in the Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Studio at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

ELIGIBILITY & AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Eligibility
    • Applicants must play violin, viola, or cello.
    • Applicants must be at least 12 years old, or have a minimum of 5 years of experience on their instruments.
  • Audition
    • All applicants must submit the following audition requirements:
      • One movement of solo Bach
        • Examples:
          • Violin: Sonatas and Partitas by J. S. Bach
          • Viola & Cello: Cello Sonatas by J.S. Bach
      • One movement of a standard concerto
        • Examples:
          • Violin: Violin Concerto No. 3 by W. A. Mozart, Violin Concerto in A minor by A. Vivaldi, Violin Concerto No. 1 by M. Bruch, etc.
          • Viola: Viola Concerto in G Major G. P. Telemann, Viola Concerto in C minor by J. C. Bach, Viola Concerto in D Major, Op. 1 by C. Stamitz, etc.
          • Cello: Cello Concerto No. 1 by J. Haydn, Cello Concert No. 1 by C. Saint-Saenz, Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85 by E. Elgar, etc.
        • NOTE: Some sonatas or concert pieces may be accepted in lieu of a concerto movement. Such as:
        • Sonatas:
          • Violin: Mozart, Brahms, or Franck Sonatas
          • Viola: Glinka or Brahms Sonatas
          • Cello: Cello: Brahms or Rachmaninoff Sonatas
        • Concert Pieces:

  • The Harmony Program strongly encourages applicants to get guidance from their private instructors on repertoire selection. The works listed above are only an example of eligible pieces.
  • The solo Bach requirement must be a movement from one of the two works listed above.
